Man jailed following Chalvington burglaries

A 41 year-old Eastbourne man has been jailed after pleading guilty to stealing £70,000 of jewellery from a house in Chalvington, near Hailsham.

Unemployed Vernon Terry George Baker, of Appledore Close has been sent to prison for
more than six years following the burglaries at a number of homes in January.

After breaking into one cottage he stole jewellery worth £70,000, and at another, he stole cash and jewellery worth £10,000.

Jewellery of a value unknown was stolen from a third cottage in the hamlet. He was jailed for six years and four months.

Carl Howard, 34, a self-employed security guard, of Santos Wharf, Eastbourne, admitted jointly burgling the third cottage with Baker.

He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment suspended for two years, ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work and given 10 days rehabilitation activity.

He was also ordered to pay £535 costs and a £140 victim surcharge.
